Leila Berg

A note about the booklist

Leila has been writing for the best part of 60 years. Though she started as a journalist she soon began producing books for children, inspired first by her reading of psychologist Susan Isaacs' books, and then by her own children. The success of these books along with her interest in childhood and in reading as such led to the writing of various series of unique early reading material, then books about children, children's rights and progressive education, and finally books concerning childhood, culminating in her own autobiography, Flickerbook. Her latest publication, The God Stories, goes back to the story-telling tradition, but is aimed at all ages from 9 to 90.

From the children's books, one of the Little Pete Stories, three of the original Nippers stories, two of the Little Nippers stories, two of the Small World books, and one of the Folk Tales, are available on this site, clickable from the complete book-list or from here. So is some info about My Dog Sunday, the only kids' book by her that we know for sure you can get! (see below))

Risinghill, Look At Kids, and Reading and Loving, published in the 60s and 70s, when English and American publishers joined with exhilaration in the mass surge for true comprehensive education, changed the lives of many students, teachers, lecturers and parents, and they wrote to Leila to say so. Further comment on these books is also available by clicking here or on their book-list entry.

Flickerbook and The God Stories can be purchased on-line via this site, and some copies of My Dog Sunday and of Reading and Loving are still available, see Buying Leila's Books.

Everything except Flickerbook and The God Stories is currently out-of-print. All copyrights are held by Leila and re-publication enquiries are welcome - please contact us.
