Leila Berg
Flickerbook
Introduction

Cover: Dead leaves on her schoolgirl shoes

This volume of autobiography, from the earliest recollections to the age of 22 at the beginning of the Second World War, is written at every stage in the subjective voice of the author/child at the specific age being revisited. It was a traumatic experience, involving as it did, not looking back from adulthood and remembering, but re-living the experiences as the child lived them.

The result is a succession of scenes not connected in the usual way, but like the flickerbook of the title, giving the illusion of a moving picture. The extracts below are simply sampled from the beginning, middle and end of the book. Published in 1997 by Granta, it is the only book of Leila's still in print apart from the May 99 publication of The God Stories by Frances Lincoln.
