The Chequers was once a rather grand
wool merchants house and is built around a solid,
possibly late 16th/early 17th Century oak frame
It became an Inn in 1660, when it would
have had a thatched roof too.
Surprisingly, The Chequers is not a "listed" building,
but has undergone restoration work, much of which
is in keeping with its history.
